Rapid Assault(tm) Version 1.0 Release Notes Revised July 10, 1995
=============================================================================
IMPORTANT NOTES:
SoundBlaster Port Settings:
----------------------
If you have changed the default port setting on your
SoundBlaster Pro or SoundBlaster 16 from it's default of 220,
you may experience difficulty generating music in the Rapid
Assault application.
Pro Audio Spectrum (PAS) 16 Settings:
--------------------------------
Requirements for the Pro Audio Spectrum (PAS) 16 sound card
are as follows. Add following to the DOS_DEVICE setting in
the DOS settings page for the Rapid Assault session.
C:\OS2\DRIVERS\MVPRODD\MVSOUND.SYS D:PD Q:PI /S:SE,SP,SD,SI
where C: =drive where OS/2 installed
PD = PAS-16 DMA channel
PI = PAS-16 IRQ level
SE = Sound Blaster enable(1)/disable(0)
SP = Sound Blaster port address
SD = Sound Blaster DMA channel
SI = Sound Blaster IRQ level
Then, in the Rapid Assault sound initialization program select
Sound Blaster for both Sound FX and Music.
IBM ThinkPad Users:
-----------------
If you are operating on an IBM ThinkPad Personal Computer,
you must disable the loading of the VESA device driver in the
AUTOEXEC.BAT file.
=============================================================================
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
GENERAL INFORMATION
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rapid Assault requires a mouse. It will not run unless the mouse driver
is loaded under DOS.
The mouse driver needs to be loaded either as MOUSE.SYS in CONFIG.SYS
or as MOUSE.COM in AUTOEXEC.BAT as part of DOS system startup.
Otherwise the game will freeze up after the first screen appears.
If you commented out these mouse driver statements, the mouse will still
be available in Windows but Rapid Assault will not be able to run.
The mouse may also effect the rate at which a vehicle turns or accelerates.
If it seems too sensitive try pressing the F6 key to reduce the sensitivity.
Press F6 again to set it back to the original value.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
AUDIO CARD SUPPORT ISSUES
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
You can reconfigure your audio card setup by double clicking on
the Sound Configuration Utility in your Rapid Assault Folder.
Rapid Assault works only with the cards listed in the SETSOUND menu.
Other cards must be setup in SoundBlaster compatible mode - i.e. either
SoundBlaster, SoundBlaster Pro or SoundBlaster 16 mode depending on the
card. Note some 16-bit cards may only be compatible with the original
SoundBlaster not the SoundBlaster 16.
Rapid Assault reads the SET BLASTER command that is in your AUTOEXEC.BAT
file to determine the interrupt number and port addresses for your audio
audio card. If it does not find this data you are prompted to provide it.
PRO AUDIO SPECTRUM USERS
Rapid Assault works with the PAS card only in SoundBlaster emulation mode.
If the music is very soft or sound effects are very loud, type the following
command from your PAS utilities directory to correct the problem.
>PAS SET OUTPUT MIXER FM TO 99.
GRAVIS ULTRASOUND USERS
Rapid Assault requires ULTRAMID to be loaded in order to support the Gravis
UltraSound card. Please refer to your Gravis user manual. You may experience
slightly longer loading times than with other sound devices because the
instrument patches are loaded to suit individual pieces of music. The time
sacrifice should be compensated by the improved instrumental quality,
especially if ULTRAMID is configured to use 16-bit patches.
CARDINAL DIGITAL SOUND PRO 16
The sound quality of the music with this card was found to be very poor. The
problem is apparently in the card itself. We suggest users turn off the music
when using this card.
CREATIVE LABS WAVE BLASTER
Rapid Assault does not make use of the wavetable synthesis provided by this
"daughter card". The card is not compatible with the Creative Labs AWE32
and is not compatible with the AWE32 or General MIDI MT-32 sound driver
provided with Rapid Assault. Users should set the Rapid Assault sound driver
to Sound Blaster 16.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
INPUT DEVICE SUPPORT ISSUES
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Rapid Assault works with standard joysticks connected via the PC game port. If
you have more than one game port check the manuals and documentation that
came with your system and make sure that only one is enabled and that you are
connected to the correct port, e.g. you may have a game port on your sound
card as well as a game port built-in to your computer.
----- THRUSTMASTER FORMULA T1 USERS
An adapter is needed to use some versions of the ThrustMaster Formula T1.
The Thrustmaster main cable plugs into your normal joystick port. The
Thrustmaster cable and connector for the second game port is not used. The
accelerator pedal can be used very effectively to move the Rapid Assault
vehicles while turning the wheel.
----- VR-1 VIRTUAL REALITY HEADSET USERS
Rapid Assault should work well with many of the new virtual reality headsets.
However, only the VR-1 headset was tested, other VR headsets may or may not
work satisfactorily. Rapid Assault does not provide separate images to give
stereoscopic 3D views.

TROUBLESHOOTING ADDENDUM
------------------------------------------------------------------------------
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why do the movie sequences appear to be jerky?
A: If you have a 386/40 based PC or if you are using a single -speed CD-ROM
drive then the movie sequences may not run smoothly. The movie sequences
need to be running on a faster machine with a double-speed CD-ROM drive in
order to run smoothly. You can skip over the movie sequences by pressing the
excape (exc) key.
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why isn't the motion and 3D graphics animation smooth?
A: If the animation is not running smoothly on your system, press the F7 key
and try reducing from the high (full screen) mode to medium or low mode. Do
not use the high (full screen ) mode if you have a 386 based PC.
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: The game froze up after the first screen was displayed.
A: Make sure that the Mouse driver was correctly installed. The mouse driver
needs to be loaded either as MOUSE.SYS in CONFIG.SYS or as MOUSE.COM
in AUTOEXEC.BAT as part of system setup If you have commented out these
mouse driver statements, the mouse will still be available in Windows but Rapid
Assault will not be able to run.
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: Why do I sometimes get a different score for destroying the same enemy
vehicles?
A: The score that you receive for destroying an enemy vehicle depends on
several factors. e.g. you get more points for destroying heavily armored vehicles
although they may look the same.
------------------------------------------------------------
Q: The message "Can't find file XXXXXXXX.XXX was displayed.
A: This message indicates that a file was not read correctly from your CD-ROM
drive. Check your CD-ROM drive and make sure that the Rapid Assault CD-
ROM is clean and free of fingerprints.
